After Aleppo, we headed to Tartous, a town on Syria's Mediterranean coastline. I quite liked Tartous - there's really not an awful lot to see there, and it's rather scruffy and chaotic (a fact that isn't helped by the current corniche works). But the people there are lovely, and very liberal and outward looking (headscarves are a rarity). I really enjoyed my time there, and would definitely go back, especially when the corniche is completed. It's not conventionally beautiful or interesting, but if you'd like to go somewhere in Syria to chill out for a couple of days and meet lots of nice locals, it's worth a visit.
The hills and mountains surrounding Tartous are absolutely stunning, and well worth seeing in their own right. I didn't take many pictures whilst in Tartous, just a few of this place - Qalat Marqab, which translates as 'The Castle of Observation'. It's about a 25 minute taxi ride north of Tartous.
